The San Francisco Brass Band (based in San Jose, CA) is looking for a Music Director to lead our award-winning ensemble along our meteoric trajectory to new and exciting heights. Since its inception in 2019 as the sole nationally competitive British-style brass band on the West Coast, this ensemble has swiftly established itself as a national powerhouse. Over the past two years, we have clinched 1st place finishes at the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Championships across progressively challenging divisions.

We are a high-level volunteer band, comprised of many of the best amateur musicians in the Bay Area. We have a strong commitment to promoting the voices of traditionally underrepresented composers and others in the music world. Our members are hungry - hungry to improve themselves, to improve the group, and to bring this underexposed genre to audiences near and far. While we’re competitive, our primary goal is music making and improving our musical skill set, individually and collectively.

We’re looking for a Music Director who shares our passion for the genre and for musical growth, both individually and as an ensemble. While experience with British brass band music and/or music competitions would be appreciated, we’re more interested in passion for making good music and helping our members grow musically. Our new Music Director will have the opportunity to work with our Executive Creative Director, Russell Gray, a world-renowned conductor and brass band clinician, and current conductor of the #1 ranked British brass band in the world (Foden's).

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Rehearse the band on a regular basis. Appoint an assistant conductor as needed to ensure coverage at all rehearsals.

  • Conduct the band at contests, including (but not limited to) the annual North American Brass Band Association Championships (NABBA).

  • Conduct the band at all non-competitive public performances.

  • Contribute to programming repertoire for contests and concerts. Help establish a musical identity for the band through programming.

  • Participate in member auditions and work with the board to identify when/where there is a musical need for additional members.

  • Work with the board to establish and enforce a musical standard and vision for the ensemble.

  • Contribute to musical education/training of the group (see musical standard) as well as the community at large (at performances).

  • Work closely with the Executive Creative Director to learn and refine the details of the British Brass Band style and tradition.

Benefits:

  • Annual stipend, plus potential for commission from solicited paid performances

  • Travel and accommodations for competitions/tours

  • Pride and satisfaction at leading a truly elite community music ensemble

Time commitment:

  • Thursday evening weekly rehearsals in San Jose, CA, with additional rehearsals in the weeks leading up to competition

  • 4-5 days for NABBA Championships (historically in the Midwest)

  • Time needed for repertoire selection, auditions, score prep, monthly board meetings, periodic concerts for the community, etc.

  • Possible international travel for competition/concert tours in future years
